2. Website Address
Seattle Community Network
3. Place it Serves
This website provides information for the city Seattle, Washington.
4. What is its mission?
Its mission is to provide general information about the city of Seattle. The community website expands on normal city websites by adding things like a volunteer section and a spirituality section. The site provides link to other pages that provide tourists with interesting things to go see and do. Each section provides links to specific information about the subjects within. For example, the "people" section has links for groups for seniors, social groups, verterans, women, etc. The community wants to give the reader a good sense of what Seattle is all about, diversity and all.
5. Who sponsors it?
The Seattle Community Network partners with the Seattle Public Library and is funded by people who decide to give contributions.
6. Is it volunteer run? Does it have paid staff? Or both?
The SCN is ran entirely by volunteers.
7. What Services does it offer and do these services cost anything?
The SCN provides free access to e-mail, web-site hosting, mailing lists and community information for members of the community. Also, Seattle Community Network accepts donations of old computers in order to give them to people who cannot afford their own.
8. If the network provides local information, what categories of information does it provide?
The network provides local information on people in the community, as well as neighborhoods and education. Their are more alternative sections (which goes without saying for such a liberal city), such as the arts, spirituality and activism. Each of the aforementioned sections provide calenders for events that occur within their particular section. There are information tabs on transportation, jobs, civics, and politics. The politics section gives helpful information on political issues within the city, specific parties involved, important documents, and links to other political websites.
9. Does the network convey a "sense of place"?
This network does convey a sense of place. There are many unique qualities about Seattle and the people in it. This becomes clear looking at sections such as Spirituality, which identifies with Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism and Islam, making it clear that Seattle supports all types of people and their beliefs. With the website also providing a link to information on activism, this shows that in Seattle, it is okay to stand up for a cause, whether it be about animal rights, or gay pride. Furthermore, the Seattle Community has a huge arts section, because in Seattle it is expected of you to express yourself in whatever way you see fit. Seattle Community Spiritual Page
10. Is there anything you find particularly interesting about this network?
What I found was most interesting about this network was the Recreation section. Recreation Page Living in Seattle, I never realized how much stuff there was to do there, until I moved away to a substantially boring town. This page shows exactly how much there is to do in Seattle, and how diverse the activities are.
